On October 14th, 2017, Pacific Beach Rotaract raised awareness and money in support of Polio Awareness Month with our second annual Pub Crawl for Polio.
During our first Pub Crawl in 2016, with over 30 attendees and $600 raised, we had the goal to outdo ourselves in 2017. Also with a new year came a new slogan, with customized t-shirts proclaiming “Countdown To History!” winning over last years “We’re This Close!” However, both accurately reflect the imperative message that we were trying to convey to everyone that participated in the Pub Crawl and anyone else that crossed our path- we are SO close to eradicating Polio, and every donation, every helping hand is making a huge impact to reach that goal.
With approximately 40 attendees, we strolled down Garnet and Grand, enjoying the beautiful day and indulging in food and a little day drinking. Six bars participated in this year’s bar crawl, starting at Baja Beach Café, then The Local Pacific Beach, Bub’s at the Beach, Cabo Cantina Pacific Beach, Cerveza Jack’s and finishing up at Moonshine Beach where we could dance the night away. All the bars helped our cause by providing awesome food and drink deals, gift cards or apparel prizes, which made the bar crawl a great deal for pub crawlers.
At the end of the day, the club was able to raise $835 dollars from this year’s Pub Crawl, surpassing last year’s amount of $600. While we were all excited about that amount, even more exciting was the fact that after matching contributions from Rotaract District 5340 and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation we raised just over $5000! These impressive amounts give us new goals to reach for next year, including the goal that we won’t even need to have a pub crawl. The goal that our contribution from this year, even though small in the grand scheme of things, helped to finally eradicate Polio.
